Bessie Rice

Bessie A. RiceMOHALL – Bessie A. Rice, 97, Mohall; died Wednesday, December 2, 2009, at a Mohall nursing home.

Bessie was born March 18, 1912, in Clay Township, rural Lansford, to Benjamin and Idumia (May) Timms.  Bessie attended Clay Center School through the 10th grade and graduated from Lansford High School.  After receiving a two year teaching certificate from Minot State College, Bessie taught school at Haas Grade School, Rural Maxbass and at Renville Consolidated school, rural Mohall.

Bessie married Ernest Rice on December 24, 1940, at Zion Lutheran Church in Mohall.  Following their marriage, they farmed near Mohall until they retired in 1980 and moved to Minot.  Ernest died December 2, 2006.

Bessie was a former member of Zion Lutheran Church, Mohall, and a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Minot, after moving to Minot.  Bessie was involved in the Bible study group and enjoyed quilting days, and making lefse at the church.  Bessie volunteered at Trinity Hospital and received an award for 3000 hours of service.  She moved to Edgewood Vista in September of 2002 where she lived until February of 2009, at which time she moved to the Good Samaritan Society nursing home in Mohall.  She was an avid walker and enjoyed bowling, crossword and jig saw puzzles.

Family:  sons, Dennis (Joanne) Rice, Dubuque, IA; and Ardel (Deanna) Rice, rural Mohall; grandchildren Marla (Jozef) Kautzky, Plymouth, MN; Devin (Shelley) Rice, Morgan Hill, CA; Scott (Leigh) Rice, Mohall; Mike (Ricole) Rice, Minot; and Jay Rice, Mohall; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Sam, and Ben Kautzky; Alexa and Alysa Rice; and Tatum and Brady Rice.  She is also survived by two sisters-in-law: Lila Lunde, Mohall; and Edith Verdorn, Big Lake, MN; and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Bessie was proceeded in death by her husband of 65 years, Ernest Rice; parents; son, Gale Rice; sister, Hazel Timms; and brothers Clarence, Ford and Dr. Walter Timms.

Funeral:  Saturday, December 5, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Mohall

Burial:  Mohall Community Cemetery
