Hannah Brekhus
May 23, 1913 – September 10, 2008

 

TOLLEY – Hannah Mae Charlotte Brekhus, 95, of Tolley, died Wednesday, September 10, 2008, at a Kenmare hospital.

She was born May 23, 1913 in Kenmare to Ole and Augusta (Stark) Stahlberg.  She was raised in Kenmare and graduated from Kenmare High School. 

In 1931, she married Ludvig Brekhus in a double wedding ceremony with Sanford and Thelma (Brekhus) Johnson.

Hannah and Lud lived and farmed in Rockford Township north of Norma until 1935.  They moved to Mohall where Lud took a job as a bulk truck driver for Farmers Union Oil Company.  In 1938, they moved to Tolley to open the Farmers Union Tolley Sub-Station. 

In 1949, Hannah and Lud became drivers for the U.S. Postal Service on a Star Route.  For 27 years, they hauled mail from Tolley and Norma to Kenmare, then back from Kenmare at least once, and often twice, a day.  Hannah drove this route more often than not.

After retirement on 1986, Hannah and Lud moved to Kenmare.  Lud died in 1989, and Hannah continued to live in Kenmare.  She moved in 2005 to the swing bed unit at the Kenmare Hospital where she resided until her death.

Hannah was active in the Tolley Community in many capacities.  She helped organize a 4-H Club and served as its leader for 16 years.  She was also a member of the Tolley Study Club, Tolley Homemakers, Evangelical Lutheran Church and the ELCW, and the Tolley Senior Citizens.

In addition to raising her own family, for many years Hannah served as a “House Mother” to many students and teachers who lived with the family during the school year.

Hannah was a wonderful mother who lovingly supported each of her children in the life paths that they chose. 

Family:  daughter, Joyce Brekhus, Minneapolis; sons, Harvey (Milly), Bismarck; Gene, San Francisco; and Ross, Smithville, TX; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Hannah was preceded in death by her husband, Ludvig; infant daughter, Leona; infant grandson, Mark; daughter-in-law, Virginia; parents, brothers and their wives, Arthur and Jennie Stahlberg, Edwin and Evelyn Stahlberg, and Melvin and Hilda Stahlberg.

Funeral:  Saturday, September 13, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tolley

Burial:  Evanger Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Kenmare

Visitation:  Two hours prior to the service at the church in Tolley.
