When I first entered into funeral service in 1988, obituaries and death notices were taken to the daily news papers.  Weekly newspapers in small towns received them by mail.  Distant daily papers received notices over the phone. 

Along came the FAX machine; a wonderful piece of equipment.  Obituaries could be faxed and a proof sent in return.  Photos still had to be taken to the paper.

The technology explosion of the 1990's allowed us to e-mail the obituary and scanned photo to any paper nationwide.  "Copy-and-paste" reduced the labor of the newspapers and reduced errors.

Now websites allow for obituaries to be posted on-line.  Many friends have moved out of state or winter in warmer climates.  A website allows friends and family at a distance the opportunity to stay in touch and offer condolences to the family.

Since my start in funeral service in 1988, we're still submitting obituaries.  How it's done has changed.
